Independence of Sierra Leone

Thesis: Sierra Leone seemingly made a smooth transition from a colonized country to an independent country but the peace ended when Siaka Stevens was named Prime Minister.

The Move Towards Independence

  • After world war II, Britain was drained economically and politically
  • Increased in Africa for Independence
  • There was a provisional constituton written in 1945
    • Granted more power to Sierra Leoneons

Milton Margai

  • Political activist and medical doctor of the mende descentmilton.jpg
    • educated at Fourah Bay college and King's College
  • Chairman of the Sierra Leone's People's Party (SLPP)
    • established to advocate for the well being of the people in Sierra Leone
    • worked to include the people in the affairs of their country
    • majority party in the cabinet
  • In 1954, Margai was apppinted chief minister of the country
  • Sierra Leone chose a parliamentary system
  • Britain officially declared Sierra Leone an independent country on April 27, 1961.
    • Sierra leone became a country within the Commonwealth
    • 100th member of the United Nations
  • Margai made first Prime Minister of the country
    • Offered positions in his cabinet to opposition leaders like his brother, Albert Margai


First Few Years of Independence

  • Margai led the nation to become prosperous after independence
  • Margai remained Prime Minister after the 1962 elections
  • In the1930's, Britain opened diamond mines to use as a way to export goods for money
    • Brought in a substantial amount of revenue
    • Sierra Leone used money to fix problems such as education, health care, and adequate housing.
  • Njala University was founded
  • In 1967, Fourah bay College was changed to a status of the University of Sierre Leone
    • Added more courses which allowed for a better variety for students
  • Central Bank of Sierra leone was established in 1963
